If Cotton Could Talk
This gripping journey of a young girl's fight for freedom in the pre-Civil War South will leave you on the edge of your seat. Set in 1850, the novel follows Bertha who is taught to read when knowing how to read was banned, punishable by whipping or even death. She uses her newfound skills to help her fellow enslaved people prepare for freedom. As the Civil War began President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring slaves were free, if they were in a rebellious State.
The slaves must find a way to survive and keep their dignity in a world of powerful slave owners determined to keep their wealth and power. A story of love, betrayal, revenge, and redemption. A story of families, of strong black men & women, and how America left their fate to the same people who enslaved them; free to do as they pleased with no repercussions, or so they thought.
If you enjoyed 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, you'll be captivated by this African American story of survival and courage.

I have read quite a few books on the Civil War but none that told the daily life & appalling conditions that slaves had to endure.
I see this is the first book in a series & I cannot wait to get the next book.
Well done, Mr. Hayes!

Awesome book! Love the way Mr. Hayes captures the attention of his audience. I felt like I was a part of the story. The characters became friends as I read about each one of their stories. This book was easy to read and follow.
