At Home:

Black veterans returned to a country where Jim Crow was still the law throughout the South. Elsewhere, segregation and discrimination existed, if not by law, then by custom.

The question on every soldier's mind: Can I control my emotions and temper when confronted by Jim Crow?

My life may be dependent on my response.

"The whites" were about to discover these were not the same Negroes.

The Sacrifice:

More than one million African Americans served in the U.S. military during World War II. They served in every branch and in every major theater of the war.

We drove trucks, maintained aircraft, loaded ammunition, worked as mechanics, served aboard ships, flew combat missions, and fought on the ground.

Approximately 708  died in combat during World War II.

The Buffalo Soldiers, the 92nd Infantry Division, alone suffered 548 killed in action during its fighting in Italy.

At some bases, Black and white service members had separate barracks, hospitals, recreational facilities, and even blood supplies.

Black veterans returned home seeking respect for their sacrifices.
